Step into the fray as Class Zero, a group of students from an elite military academy whose country is attacked by an aggressive neighbouring Empire. In the brutal and harrowing struggle that follows, defeat the Empire and uncover the secrets behind the war using a range of powerful magical and combat abilities and an exciting new battle system.
A solid porting effort, though one that shows Square Enix still has a little ways to go.
The graphics may be from 2011, but the story and the combat system are great. It has everything you can expect from a Final Fantasy title.
Type-0 HD can feel like the tortuous result of hasty assembly, but if allowed the time and energy to piece itself together, it stands as clear and original as others bearing its exalted title.
It's got some interesting concepts, but the execution is off. The overall design and nature of the PSP game feels cramped when ported to consoles and PC, and was generally distracting when in any part of the game that wasn't some version of combat.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, the biggest and most ambitious work from Hajime Tabata (the man behind the anticipated Final Fantasy XV), is a game that constantly struggles between genius and mediocrity, and the PC porting does not help, on way or the other. Few technical improvements, and very few new features.
The trouble is though, the gameplay is not the major part of the game. It’s the story, and the many long non-interactive cutscenes that often feel out-of-place next to the PSP-quality graphics.
A convoluted story and ugly visuals, each of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD's flaws are only made worse by bringing them to bigger screens.
