How did cyber sports come about?

Cybersport arose now when one person had the opportunity to compete with another in a computer game. An integral part of popular competitions is entertainment (so no one is watching curling), which in the context of computer games means the graphics and dynamics of the process. The first game that fits the requirements is the legendary Doom 2 with team battles.

Truly cyber-sports turned out to be her more technically advanced follower of Quake, originally sharpened for a joint game (multiplayer game – multiplayer).

Quake’s popularity contributed to the founding of the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) in 1997. This is how cybersport appeared, and with it new WCG, ESL leagues and their regional variants.

What games are cyber sports?

There are not so many popular match-oriented games. One of the basic requirements for the e-sports game is the predominance of the element of skill over the element of luck. Chance does not have to determine the outcome, only personal and team skills. Usually, developers initially decide whether their game will be sports or exclusively entertaining.

Another mandatory requirement is a balance and equal opportunities for all participants. Often it is the inability to balance the gameplay that buries a promising game, but more successful competitors conquer a multimillion audience.

MOBA-games turned out to be the most attractive among other genres. They are simple and have almost unlimited potential in honing personal skills and team play. At the same time, the in-game system selects opponents with a similar level of the game, which excludes meetings with a much more experienced opponent. Entering the match with a team of friends and coordinating actions through voice communication to conquer new ratings together is a completely unique and very exciting experience. Most MOBA games are free, and in-game purchases do not affect the balance and are intended only for character decoration. But if you decided to buy some more games you might need to have some cooperations with those companies.

There are not many examples of well-shot cyber sports games. Among the shooters over the years, the undisputed favorite is Counter-Strike. Starcraft dominates strategies. There are games for those who like a measured and quiet gameplay, for example, Hearthstone, which embodies the ideas and principles of board card games in digital form.

A separate genre is the so-called MOBA-game, derived from the map, once created for the strategy of Warcraft 3. The concept of “Multiplayer Online Battle Arena – MOBA) in 2010 was introduced by Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends . Four years later, Blizzard and some other companies released a separate game in the same genre. Now almost every developer is trying to copy League of Legends, but it turns out they don’t really.
