I’ve noticed how the ability to smell in-game events or items haven’t been discussed in great detail, which I find odd.
If your character’s near an event which emits a smell such as a burning fire or a dead body, your character could emit sniffling sounds with status messages such as “I smell something burning” or “That smells disgusting” etc. This could also be affected by wind direction in which a fire in the north of your location cannot be smelt because winds are travelling from the south.
I think this upholds the survival aspect of the game and a great way of tracking players. It would be interesting to one day find a few players by their campfire in the middle of the forest and to suddenly attack them by surprise all because you could smell their fire.
Let me know what you all think!
Great idea! I thought similarly about dead bodies. If you see a dead body you the option to inspect it and it will messages like this:
“This body was bled to death by several cuts.”
“This body was shot to the head.”
“There are no apparent wounds on this body. ”
But then again, posting here is next to useless, i’d recommend posting suggestions at DayZ’s official suggestion forum.
Furthermore, your ability to smell could be blocked or seriously inhibited by certain illnesses.
I thought about this too, since I died a few times from drinking fuel out of a canteen
That’s another thing, surely we’d know the difference between oil and water? aside from looking at it.
This is actually a really good idea.
Good constructive post CarlR. These ideas will work their way up.
