Most of the time our heroine needs to race from floor to floor to complete given tasks. Along the way she’ll meet other students and teachers that have some interesting stuff to tell, but there isn’t much time to chat – the clock is ticking, and if the time runs out, you’ll have to start over. True to the anime with it colourful casting of characters, Little Witch Acamedia: Chamber of Time is never convincing when it comes to its gameplay. Repetitive and poorly designed, the game is quickly boring and frustrating.
Chamber of Time is an incredibly uneven experience. It’s an amazing recreation of the Little Witch Academia universe with impressive art and fantastic voice acting. However, that accomplishment is squandered by how tedious the navigation of the academy becomes, bland fetch quests, poor AI, bad boss design, and sub-par combat. This could have been a good game with better choices, but instead it’s difficult to recommend to even the most rabid Little Witch Academia fan, much less the broader RPG-playing public.
Super-fans of the show may get some enjoyment out of the story, but only if they can stomach a lot of grind, tedium and wandering through identical corridors, and for anyone else, just stick to watching the anime.
